EBSCO Publishing has just released a new book summary. How have the issues facing managers and leaders today changed in the last decades? John P. Kotter argues that they have not. In  Leading Change, Kotter shows how despite decades of study and learning, many of the fundamental ideas behind leading successful change are still poorly understood. Because the pace of change has significantly increased the consequences of poor leadership can be worse than in the past. The traditional focus on management must now be shifted to leadership in order to build organizations with many leaders who can operate quickly and nimbly and inspire others to do so too. The eight-stage change solution will guide businesses through the sometimes messy process of implementing transformational change in an organization while offering strategies for building solid twenty-first century organizations.

John P. Kotter offers readers the following advice:

·         The basics of management are poorly understood by the general population of leaders and managers, even after decades of study on management structure and capabilities.

·         Management is not leadership. To become successful businesses in the twenty-first century, or to maintain success, organizations must build on leadership.

·         John Kotter presents an eight-stage process of change that can help organizations become fast and nimble:

1.       Establish a sense of urgency.

2.       Create the guiding coalition.

3.       Develop a vision and strategy.

4.       Communicate the change vision.

5.       Empower broad-based action.

6.       Generate short-term wins.

7.       Consolidate gains and produce more change.

8.       Anchor new approaches in the culture.

·         Successful organizations of the twenty-first century have no room for complacency and must continually build on a sense of urgency to meet new challenges.

·         Growing leaders who value lifelong learning and growth, instead of focusing solely on management tasks, can help businesses to more easily adapt to the new norm of a rapidly changing business environment.

In addition to a 7-10 page summary of the book, each Business Book Summary includes a Key Concepts section that outlines the main points of the book, an About the Author section that informs readers of the author’s background as well as their additional written works, and a Features of the Book Section that explains the special features found within the book.
