How These Architects Are Increasing Profits AND Freeing Up Their Time For Design

Inspiring Success, Design Legacies and Profit Growth in Architecture Studios Who Want to Earn Their Worth

March 24, 2014 - PRLog -- Thomas Jefferson, a countries famous politician, once said Architecture embodies the soul of his new country; and that a building was a simple ideology. The process of construction equated to the task of building a nation. If an Architect is the person who envisions a new reality and then creates the plans to bring this vision into reality, then Thomas Jefferson could be said to be the “architect” who envisioned this country and created the design and blueprint which was to be constructed.

Thomas Jefferson was also one of the wealthiest Presidents. So, why then did each of us who studied architecture have a professor who told us: “if you want to make money, this is the wrong field for you. Quit now and go and study something in business”. This idea of Architects needing to be the starving artist is changing. Many of you might be asking yourselves how you could make more money, or get the “right” kinds of projects with the right kinds of paying clients. There is another way.

For many of the architects today who have experienced incredible growth in profits and the speed in which their design legacy is being brought into the world, the demand from new clients has been astounding. The change actually had begun from the “inside” before the changes on the outside happened- haven’t we heard this before? So How did they do it, and how could you do it too? Simple, not everything has to be done by the architect, and not everything needs to be done "in-house."

The company at helping architects grow their business profits, increasing clientel, maximising office resources and getting designs to construction faster than anything we have ever seen has been operating in the background and shares  this belief that architects are truly entrepreneurs behind everything else that goes on.

“Architects are the heros creating the ways society develops. They are masters of art, design, science and phychology amongst many other traits of the world’s most wealthy and successful entrepreneurs. Architects are innovative and they integrate soft architecture (sociology and phychology) into their special designs to bring the space and vision to life. In just a short period, where no community existed, empowered communities are now brought abut through these designs. I believe a world with architects is a better world to live in, so I started the firm to help Architects against their common enemy…” says Founder and Managing Director of Intervention Architecture- Prashant Bhaga.

This common enemy mentioned has always been an impediment to the Architects we spoke to. It is the one name which arouses anger and frustration which makes an architect want to rip their hair out. Without this enemy no design would be approved so that it may be brought into reality. Drafting a set of documents, filling out forms and spending days just trying to get their designs approved has made this the largest frustration to architects. The “cherry on top” as you could call it, was when the SANS10400 regulations were passed placing the responsibility on the architect to now complete energy efficiency calculations. Yes, we are talking about the municipality who requires municipal submissions to be drafted, forms to be filled out, calculations which need to be done and days which need to be spent to find the person who can assist you-the architect- with taking the plans through to be submitted and to be hopefully approved if everything that has been drafted is according to their satisfaction. These tasks, the resources used and manpower in the form of technologist which are brought into an office increases the architects office monthly expenses, takes up every free minute away from reaching out to new clients, bringing in new clients, marketing your firm to give your designs the exposure they deserve. It requires having your team in the office drafting instead of them on site where they are needed, and buying more and more workstations which cost a considerable amount (estimated around R90 000 with the licensed architectural drafting software, the furniture and the computers needed, not to mention the salary of around R78 000 and upwards per annum and the time acquiring and managing takes out from your design schedule). These submissions are milking architects dry. It is very hard to remember that passion. Designing and creating is very hard without any money coming in and the time being wasted.

Many Architects have found the way out of this “starving artist” rut and onto their way of being architects who are realising their designs, getting more of the kind of clients they want, creating a design legacy, and making a profit while doing it all. As FORBES once quoted: “In order to do a good job of the things we decide to do, we must eliminate all of the unimportant opportunities.” Intervention Architecture has been focused on the business of architecture, and helping architects outsource these unimportant opportunities to their more than competent team. Through this focus on design and the tremendous value add in more time being invested in the design phase; coupled with a team like Prashants whose focus is to get the developer or clients building drafted up, submitted, and approved faster then ever before; means more value is given, and architectural fees can definitly be increased. The architect would recieve a greater profit, and would have more time to focus on their passion.

“Architecture is the soul of the country. Through focusing on your core tasks and passion, and outsourcing the rest; architects can once again begin to build the nation through their design legacy. We just enjoy helping them do just that.”~ Prashant Bhaga, the architect’s best friend.
