ATLANTA - March 20, 2014 - PRLog -- Following the 2010 census the numbers showed that the Atlanta population had increased. Through the redistricting process, the Georgia Legislature created one new Commission Seat on the Fulton County Commission. Atlanta Attorney Kwame Thompson and four other candidates are running for the seat.

“I have been involved in my neighborhood association since I moved into Mechanicsville. When my friends in our neighborhood asked me to run, it was a no-brainer”, said Thompson.

“Even in my practice, I work to empower people to strive for the best. I refuse to let where I live or how I look define me. WE are all a part of Atlanta no matter where we are from.”

Thompson is no stranger to community activism and public service. His mother, former State Representative Betty Thompson, was a pioneer who spent 8 years in the Missouri Legislature. His brother, Anthony Thompson is President and CEO of the Kwame Building Group, one of the largest African-American construction management firms in the country.

Kwame earned an undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Missouri and has a law degree from Washington University. In law school his focus was public policy. During school, he knew Atlanta was where he wanted to start his practice. He is been practicing in the city for more than fifteen years.

“Living in Mechanicsville, I have seen the city and my community evolve. Some of the same things I saw back at home are starting to trend here. I promise I will not let things devolve, not on my watch”, Thomson said.

Unfortunately, tragedy touched Thompson’s family in St. Louis, when his older brother Tyrone Thompson, a former police chief was gunned down in cold blood. His murder is speculated to have been gang related and remains an open case.

“We are all affected by one another.  Our lives all interrelated so we have to be pro-active and not reactive when it comes to keeping our communities safe. It starts with education and equipping young people with the necessary tools so they can be successful”

Besides running a successful law practice, Thompson is an instructor at Atlanta Technical College, sits on the city Procurement Appeals Commission, Taxicab and Vehicles for Hire Commission and is a past member of the Atlanta Beltline Tax Allocation District Advisory Council. He is an active member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and attends Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church.  For more information please visit www.kwame4change.com
