RENTON, Wash. - March 20, 2014 - PRLog -- When it comes to buying glasses, most people are concerned about price and cosmetic reasons. Being able to purchase frames online can save hundreds of dollars, clearing away one concern. The other gets taken care of by technology. Some websites offer features like, uploading your image and superimpose the frames. But an important factor gets ignored: the safety and the quality of the lenses.

A published study in the Journal of Optometry found that almost half of the prescription glasses bought online had the wrong lenses or they didn’t meet the standards for impact testing. Impact testing means the lens can shatter or crack. The study discovered that treatments such as anti-reflection coatings were not added or it was added incorrectly, and many have the wrong prescription. Lastly, study findings revealed 1 in 4 pairs of children’s eyewear did not pass impact resistance testing.

Saving money is important, but not when it comes to glasses. Prescription glasses are classified as medical devices and are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration.  They have to meet specific standards that online stores do not meet. To guarantee safe and correct lenses, visit a licensed optometrist.  Make your appointment at our office today!
