“TEDxIIT brings individuals out of their silos to work toward a common goal, and share ideas and resources along the way.” Amy Lee Segami, TEDxIIT Event Co-organizer.

CHICAGO — Disruptive technology, drones and design are among the topics that will be discussed at the fourth annual TEDxIIT on Saturday, April 5. Held at IIT Tower, the event will spotlight students, faculty, alumni and Chicago technology leaders whose talks are connected to the event theme, Infinite Impact.

Sanjib Sahoo, award-winning CIO of tradeMONSTER Group, will headline the event. “I am honored to be a part of this exciting event and share our ideas
to the global community. tradeMonster has hired many IIT alumni and we are thrilled to continue to support the next generation of talent,” said Sahoo.

Sahoo will discuss the disruptive technology, which has changed the way people interact with their finances on a worldwide level and the impact on personal financial decision.

IIT alumna and founder of Latent Design Katherine Darnstadt is also among the speakers. Her idea is to focus on “the intersection of design and community development to create social, economic and environmental impact beyond the building.”

Other speakers include Leo Burnett’s Co-Lead of New Technologies Ian Beacraft, entrepreneur Monika Wiela and IIT student Raed Tawil. Originally from Poland, Wiela founded two successful online fashion retail businesses; she will speak about her latest venture which has a social purpose. IIT student Raed Tawil, a Syrian-American who lived in Syria during the current crisis, will present his research on drones for civilian use.

TEDxIIT was founded by IIT alumna Amy Lee Segami in 2009 shortly after she was invited to speak at the inaugural TEDxPeachtree in Atlanta. Her vision is to showcase the many talents and ideas of the IIT community. “The project brings individuals out of their silos to work toward a common goal, and share ideas and resources along the way,” said Segami.

As the co-organizer, Segami works with a different group of international student leaders every year. This term, Isabelle Romero, a sophomore from Michigan, is leading the group. Working with her is Yoetzin Diaz, Vice President of committees and a senior in Architecture from Mexico; Webmaster Pritom Gogoi, a graduate student in Computer Science from India; and Lisa Lee, secretary and a freshman in Business major from Singapore.

Up to 50 student volunteers are involved in event productions, communications, speakers, marketing and sponsors.

Turning obstacles into opportunities, the team learns valuable life lessons beyond the classroom. “The students involved learn creative problem solving and experience the potential for innovation through collaboration. TEDxIIT offers tremendous learning and sharing experience for the students as much as for the speakers and audience,” Segami reflects.

In the past, the event has sold out. Last year the live-streaming attracted 30,000 viewers globally.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California almost 30 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world's leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes on a diverse mix of topics. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The TED2014 Conference will take place in Vancouver, British Columbia, along with the TEDActive simulcast in neighboring Whistler. TEDGlobal 2014 will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

TED's media initiatives include TED.com, where new TED Talks are posted daily; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed; and TEDBooks, short e-books on powerful ideas. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world get help translating their wishes into action; TEDx, which supports individuals or groups in hosting local, self-organized TED-style events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
