New school programme finally seeing results that can last?

DERBY, U.K. - March 19, 2014 - PRLog -- In 2011 the government brought in to action a scheme which addresses schools needing urgent repair called the Priority School Building Programme (PSBP). This brought to light 261 schools that would have to be rebuilt or renovated; the first school of the program is due to be completed this coming year.

The PSBP scheme focuses on doing more for less than the building schools for the future programme (BSF) which when launched doubled spending on education within 10 years, attracting the world’s best contractors and architects. The first four years saw only 42 of the intended 200 schools to be built completed with the budget being underestimated by about £1bn a year. Contractors for PSBP have also been able to come up with blue prints to cut down the cost by half the price for each square meter, with BSF costing around £2900 per square meter and PSBP only £1450. This has led to smaller margins for sub contractors and contractors undertaking school projects.

The first 2 schools designed by the new rules are the Ian Ramsey C of E Comprehensive School in Stockton-on-Tees and Whitmore Park Primary School in Coventry, both are due to open this coming summer.  The remaining schools will be funded by PF2 (Private Finance 2) the government hopes that this scheme will help increase interest in raising money for public projects. This will generate more work for contractors including schools, roads and large scale infrastructures as the government are willing to give the Tax Payer a share of up to 49% for new projects.

The future seems very promising for all sub contractors and contractors with the PSBP scheme begins to take light, increasing its annual spending. No matter what area you specialise in you are most likely going to be affected by this upcoming scheme as your work load increases.
