The Definitive Guide to ISO 45001:2016 published by FMS

MANCHESTER, U.K. - March 19, 2014 - PRLog -- ISO, the International Organisation for Standardisation, have announced that they are working on a new standard from the management of health and safety - ISO 45001:2016. To alleviate any concerns over the content of this important standard, the Federation of Management Systems (FMS) has published The Definitive Guide to ISO 45001:2016.

ISO 45001 is to be based upon the OHSAS 18001 standard. The current version - OHSAS 18001:2007 is used as the basis for occupational health and safety management systems in thousands of companies around the world. The proposed standard is significantly different from OHSAS 18001; the structure, format and terminology of the new standard will be substantially altered.

The Definitive Guide to ISO 45001:2016 is based on the current available information with updates from ISO committee members.

The guide covers:

the reasons for some of the changes, such as Annex SL;
an overview of the changes;
the current status of the drafting process;
details of the proposed changes, with guidance;
the proposed ISO timetable;
the transitional arrangements; and
an action plan outlining what organisations need to do.

ISO 45001:2016 will specify the requirements for an Occupational Health and Safety Management System. This new standard will force the transformation of every OHSAS 18001 management system in the world.

Anthony Wilkinson, the FMS Chief Executive commented:

"ISO 45001:2016 is not a minor editorial revision of OHSAS 18001; this is a significant restructuring, rewording and refocusing of a very important International Standard. The Definitive Guide to ISO 45001:2016 puts all of the proposed changes into context by explaining the detail of the revisions, and the reasons for the new standard.

"ISO 45001:2016 will do away with many of the health and safety management system "traditions" that are familiar to many of us - organisations will need time to adjust. More than that, the new standard will require organisations to integrate the management of health and safety into the heart of their business, and expect top management to get involved in the process.

"ISO 45001:2016 introduces some significant changes to the familiar OHSAS 18001, it is important that organisations, especially senior management, begin to understand the new requirements at the earliest opportunity - they've got some big decisions to make."

The Definitive Guide to ISO 45001:2016 is available from the Federation of Management Systems online store at http://www.fedms.org/store/c4/Documents.html.
