Follow on Google News | The Bottled Water Cooler... There's More In The Water Than Meets the EyeUnfortunately, despite the millions spent on marketing bottled water as the greatest thing since the invention of the wheel, bottled water safety still remains questionable. Before we delve into the health risks associated with the plastic bottles themselves, let us take a look at the dispenser - no really, go and take a look inside your dispenser while the bottle is off the top. What you will inevitably see is bio-film. Bio-film forms when microorganisms adhere to a surface, in this case the plastic reservoir of your dispenser. Bio-film can contain numerous types of organisms including bacteria, archaea, protozoa, fungi and algae. Think of a pond… have you ever stepped on a rock at water’s edge and noticed that slimy layer or ‘gunk’? That is bio-film. Certainly not something you would purposely ingest. Most people believe that if they clean out their cooler every month or so that somehow they are not exposed to the bio-film buildup. Well, I hate to be the one to break it to you, but if you lift that bottle to clean the plastic reservoir and see the funky blackish bio-film – it was there yesterday, and the day before and the day before that, when you drank from the cooler. CLEAN - PURE WATER NOW: http://pureplanetwaters.com/ Bottled water coolers dispense water through a simplistic use of gravity - hence the bottle being place upside down. As water is remove from the dispenser it is replaced with air.... where does that air come from? It comes from the environment where the cooler is located. What does your business environment bring in into your water? Coworkers' germs, dust, toner dust, industrial chemicals? All of these airborne contaminants are easily introduced to the water as it is displaced by air. Every time you hear that 'glurg-glurg' sound your dispenser is actively introducing these contaminants to the water. If this alone does not make you think twice about the cleanliness of the bottled cooler let us look to the bottle itself as the dangers that lie within are far worse than bacteria... Most big 5 gallon plastic jugs are constructed containing BPA... Bisphenoyl A . This chemical has been linked to numerous serious health risks including heart disease, cancer and developmental issues for children. BPA is known to leech from the lining of the plastic bottle into the water. As you may be aware those plastic bottles are continually reused. This is why your supplier takes a deposit from you for each one. Before we take our hats off to the conglomerate water supplier for their ‘green effort’ you must weigh the risk to the reward. The more usage the bottle is subject to, the more likely that BPA is leeching into the water. If you have a chance, take a look at the bottles themselves, you will see scratches and fine line 'cracks'. This is inevitable and occurs when these bottles are transported on hand trucks, stacked upon each other, refilled at the filling stations, etc. These fine cracks provide the perfect pathway for the BPA to leech out of the plastic. You may have heard that plastic bottles should not be subjected to sunlight... same premise... the sunlight breaks down the composition of the bottles just enough so that the BPA can leech into the water. You may be thinking 'big deal what's a little BPA'? You may even find a false sense of comfort in the fact that it seems everyone drinks from plastic water bottles... don't fault yourself, this is a psychological phenomenon known as pluralistic ignorance. Think back to your childhood, did anyone ever say to you "if your friends jumped off a bridge...." Just because the use of plastic bottles is widespread throughout our society this should not serve to assure you of its safety. Back in the early to mid 1900's cigarette smoking was extremely popular. In the 1950's it is estimated that 45% of Americans smoked cigarettes. Does that mean smoking cigarettes is safe? If you are one of the millions who bought into the illusion of pristine springs that Joe media cleverly convinced you flows from these chemical ridden bottles … brace yourself…. Please get up from your desk and go read the top label on the 5 gallon jug. 50% of you are in for a shock. Just about ½ of all bottled water is from a municipal water source, in other words… the tap. Take a moment to digest that, because it is truly the most wasteful practice I can think of. To take water from the tap, filter it and then put it into a bottle that leeches chemicals into the water, set it on top of a primitive dispenser that introduces bacteria and airborne contaminants on top of the chemicals… it befuddles me that someone can drink this and feel good about spending money to do so. As the truth about these 5 gallon water “Petri dishes” is more widely exposed, an increasing number of consumers are choosing the more logical, cost effective, superior alternative. Bottleless water filtration coolers. There is no better way to ensure that the water you are drinking is actually pure than to filter at the point of use. Added bonuses of eliminating the bottle are plentiful… no more wasted time ordering, taking deliveries, going over confusing bills and bottle deposits, no more wasted space storing the big unsightly jugs, no more heavy lifting or dangerous water spills by the cooler, no more running out of water between deliveries … and my friend perhaps the biggest bonus of all… you can lay your head down knowing that you did something to help eliminate the needless waste and environmental impact of producing, delivering and disposing of needless plastic jugs!
