Vattikuti Foundation Sponsored Transplant Project Adds Another “First” in Patient Safety

Transplant Project is the “First” to Use IDEAL* Research Standards to Protect Patients

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - March 18, 2014 - PRLog -- Southfield, MI:  Dr.Mahendra Bhandari, CEO of the Vattikuti Foundation announces that the ongoing Foundation-funded robotic kidney transplant project is now considered to be the first to follow a stringent set of guidelines developed to protect patients who take part in medical research.  Robotic Kidney Transplantation with Regional Hypothermia was the first medical study in the world to use a novel method of cooling a donated kidney before implantation in the patient and also inside the body while being surgically grafted to the recipient.  Dr. Mani Menon, Chair of the Vattikuti Urology Institute, Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit devised the method, which has undergone years of planning and development.  The results were recently published in the journal European Urology.

The IDEAL* Collaboration has posted an article recognizing the use of the IDEAL Guidelines by  the VUI/Medanta Hospital team during the development of Robotic Kidney Transplantation with Regional Hypothermia.  The procedure features the use of regional hypothermia (saline ice slush), a technique devised by Dr. Mani Menon.  An IDEAL official calls it a "first", because the research          followed the IDEAL Guidelines (explained on their website linked below), designed to protect patients taking part in medical research throughout each phase of the process, which is continuing presently.  The article also includes a link to a series of PowerPoints from the workshop describing and charting the use of the IDEAL Guidelines through every stage of the development and surgical work.

Dr. Peter McCullough, IDEAL Collaboration Chair is quoted in the article saying, ”This is exciting news.  We agree with Dr. Sood (one of the study authors) that his (VUI/Medanta) team are, as far as we are aware, the first to take a surgical innovation through consecutive stages of the IDEAL Framework using the guidance provided in the (IDEAL) Recommendations."  The team, led by VUI Chair Dr. Mani Menon and Dr. Mahendra Bhandari, CEO of the Vattikuti Foundation, worked in the US on the development research and began the clinical trials at Medanta Hospital in India in cooperation with Dr. Rajesh Ahlawat.  U.S. surgeons Dr. Ronney Abaza and Dr. Wooju Jeong were part of the international team, which included Dr. Pranjal Modi of India amongst others.   Results have been published in the journal European Urology, BJUI and other medical publications.  The IDEAL article address is:  http://www.ideal-collaboration.net/2014/03/ideal-idea-and...
