The Amazon contest allows up to 50,000 writers to enter their independent work into five categories for the chance of winning a book deal or professional reviews. Heiress, P.I. was one of only 400 books in the Young Adult category to make it through the first cut, which eliminated up to 9,600 books. Amazon does not release the total number of entrants.
If Mahan wins the grand prize, she'll get a book deal for her hilarious novel and a $50,000 advance on royalties. She'll have to beat out the other YA books as well as the winners of the other four categories: Romance, General Fiction, Mystery & Thriller, and Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror. Each finalist, not including the Grand Prize Winner, receives a book deal and a $15,000 advance. Several other prizes, for Publishers Weekly or Amazon-selected Editors' reviews, will also be awarded.
