Is your coffee break giving you cavities?

CHICAGO - March 16, 2014 - PRLog -- Most people understand that eating candy and sweet things is likely to cause them tooth decay and cavities. But few people realize just how common the problem is, even for adults. The fact is though as we get older and join the workforce, what we do in our regular workplace coffee breaks is one of the biggest causes of adult dental problems.

"It's not just the sticky doughnuts and bars of candy that are drilling little holes in adult's teeth,"  explains Dr. Mark Sawyer on Western Ave.. "When we buy those giant macchiatos in Starbucks we're actually drinking two to three teaspoons of raw sugar, plus the sugar in the whipped cream abd the syrup on top. You may as well coat your teeth in glucose and call it a day, and if the coffee doesn't get you, there's a good chance the shakes, cakes and sugary iced teas will."

It's not all bad news, warns the dentist who has been treating patients in Rogers Park, IL for over 20 years. It is still possible to have your coffeebreak and enjoy it too.

"Use sweeteners instead of the partially refined raw sugars to keep the decay off your teeth, and the weight off too," recommends Dr. Sawyer. And stick to expresso, if you can handle it.
