Taking a step further, today Indian Railways has announced the release of recently developed "SMS Gateway" that will allow people to receive free SMS alerts on the ongoing status of booked tickets. Formerly, the SMS alerts were sent only when the reservation was done. Any update on waiting list position or seat confirmation weren't sent via text SMS.
The passengers needed to log onto the website or call 139 number in order to know the updated status of their reservation. But this will not happen anymore. That's the past and future is in your favor.
The 'SMS Gateway' project will be employed to send SMS alerts to people whenever there's a status change in the booked ticket, as compared to towards the initial booking status (For Example: WL to RAC, RAC to CNF, WL to CNF). SMS alerts before the chart preparation will be sent daily, and in case of booking status change only, beginning from five days prior to the journey date.
SMS alerts will also be sent after final chart preparation (that is normally done 3-4 hrs before train departure) which will convey the particular Berth No., Coach No. and RAC No. for individuals whose final reservation status has transformed in comparison to the initial reserved status. In case of any alteration associated with the ticket, such as ticket up gradation or chair re-allotment also SMS alerts will be sent.
This can be a huge change because now people won't have do anything by himself. They'll keep getting updates whenever anything changes. Not only it will help the people but also help to reduce the last minute enquiry rush on the IRCTC website. People won't have to visit the website for checking PNR Status any longer.
The search volume for such queries is really huge, that is why you will find numerous of online portals and mobile applications specifically for checking PNR status. I think, very soon these apps will become useless as no one need to go there for examining their ticket status.
