BARTLETT, Ill. - March 14, 2014 - PRLog -- Samiyah was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a somewhat rare childhood from of bone cancer. After initial treatments with surgery and chemotherapy, Samiyah was thought to be clear of the cancer. However, recently the cancer has returned to a new location. New treatments for Samiyah will include a stem cell transplant with a lengthy 6 week hospital stay.

Community partners have played a very important role in this makeover. First Eagle Bank in Bartlett and The Team One Volleyball Club are sponsors for this room. Additionally, Rosseland Construction of Bartlett generously donated all of their time and services, spending two weeks to make over a loft bedroom into a bedroom including a new closet area. Over 23 volunteers will be working on Saturday to complete Samiyah’s new room.

Naperville resident Kelly Knox founded the Special Spaces Chicagoland chapter in 2012. Since its inception, over a dozen ill children have gotten room makeovers. Knox has a full slate scheduled for 2014 and a waiting list is in place for many more deserving children. The organization’s goal is to create dream bedrooms for children with life-threatening medical illnesses. The focus is answering one question: Where does a child go when battling a serious illness to find peace and comfort? A bedroom of course.  According to Knox, “A bedroom to most kids is a personal space—a place that represents his or her unique personality. For a child with a critical illness who spends a lot of time at home in his or her room, that room should be a very special space.  A place of comfort and refuge. A place that inspires and gives hope.”

The Chicagoland chapter has room makeovers scheduled on a monthly basis for children in need. Follow the progress on Facebook at “Special Spaces Chicagoland”.
