FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - Oct. 27, 2014 - PRLog -- NASA has been developing a new heavy launch Rocket called the SLS (Space Launch System). The SLS rocket is an effort to return to manned space exploration beyond earth's orbit. EnerTrac Corp. is working with NASA ground support group (KSC) using EnerTrac's unique direct drive technology to develop winch motors tailored to NASA's needs.

EnerTrac has been working with NASA/KSC for two years. First NASA purchased EnerTrac’s standard product to evaluate and test both the motor and the companies capabilities. After this initial phase EnerTrac was asked to develop a motor that can properly wind a cable in a winch system that will be used to disconnect the fuel hoses and electrical connections at T zero launch time. The NASA/KSC requirements are described in brief, as follows:

Enertrac Corporation will be capable of providing the brushless DC hub motor configuration required for installation into the Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage Umbilical (ICPSU) Arm. The Statement of Work requires EnerTrac to adhere to detailed specifications for the motor, and how it integrates into the launch tower. The specifications require cutting edge technologies to achieve the power to weight and ruggedness required in the harsh environment of a rocket launch.

The EnerTrac team, working with NASA design engineers in a collaborative effort have designed a winch motor to withstand the harsh environment of a rocket launch.

After a year of designing and prototying, including rigorous setup and testing at an independent verification lab, EnerTrac is happy to announce the Cable Winch motor meets or exceeds the NASA requirements for cable pull force, a key milestone achievement of the project and a requirement for delivery. EnerTrac Corp. is now in the first stages of delivering the Cable winch motor to NASA for integration into the launch tower.
