MONTREAL - March 13, 2014 - PRLog -- (Montreal, Canada) – March 14, 2014.  ID Communications is pleased to announce the worldwide DVD release on 411films.com of “Sweet16” a 78 min. documentary which takes the viewer on a 5-year journey inside the life of teens with Type 1 diabetes, by director Dan Shannon whose daughter learns she has Type 1 just before her 16th birthday.

Sweet 16 recently screened at prestigious International Diabetes Federation annual event in Melbourne Australia, Dec 3 2013, an event which brings together more than 10,000 healthcare professionals relating to diabetes annually. Sweet 16 is the only film showcasing the teen perspective of Type 1 diabetes.

Here is a testimonial from a recent DVD buyer from Australia:
"Just watched the DVD with my son who was diagnosed at age 18 and has had T1 for 3 years, very emotional for me and a must view for any family with a teen diagnosed. An eye opener for those living in 3rd world countries with T1, life shouldn't be that difficult to obtain insulin to keep you alive. Well done Katia and family, keep up the great work!" - Deb Louden, Australia

The film is now available with a special offer to Public libraries for a 20% discount to start off the new year, until March 31st, 2014, using the special coupon code PL2 in checkout. There is also a discount offered for consumer purchases.

About the Film: A teen perspective on a type 1 diabetes diagnosis
“When I was first diagnosed, my brain just went from being a no-responsibility teenager to, Oh, I’m grown up now. I have to start taking care of myself now…it’s so interior, it’s so big, it affects everything that you do, but no one sees it.”, says Katia Shannon, one of the film’s main protagonists, who was diagnosed at 15 with type 1 diabetes.

A life threatening disease, diabetes currently affects more than 380 million people worldwide according to a recent report by The International Diabetes Federation.  Globally, it is estimated a person dies every 6 seconds due to diabetes related causes.

A parent's perspective
“As a father and documentary producer/cameraman most of my professional career, it was obvious to me when I saw what Katia was going through, that her story could potentially be told to help others, if it worked out  for her” says  Dan Shannon, the film’s producer and also  Katia’s  father.   “I think Sweet 16 is a coming–of-age story that goes beyond diabetes, as many youth struggle with health and identity issues .” Says  Mr.  Shannon.

Sweet 16 explores not only the issues teens face with the disease, but also inquires into the science of the condition, from the latest hopeful therapies to human trials of promising treatments.  The film offers a frank yet hopeful portrait of diabetes management both from a medical and a family perspective.

“Will a cure for diabetes be possible in the next generation? If so we want to do what we can to push that process along. In the meantime, we have been invited to present the film at  Children's Hospitals and Endocrynologist conferences, where the film has been a vehicle for substantial discussion within the caregiver industries, where diabetes is at stake” says Mr. Shannon, whose daughter participated in human trials for some promising therapies showcased in the film.
