BOCA RATON, Fla. - March 13, 2014 - PRLog -- The realities of childhood cancer: Worldwide, 175,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year. And in the U.S., more children die of childhood cancer than any other disease—more than AIDS, asthma, cystic fibrosis, congenital anomalies and diabetes combined. Two-thirds of children treated for childhood cancer will suffer long-term effects from treatment including loss of hearing and sight, heart disease, secondary cancers, learning disabilities, infertility and more. Childhood cancer isn't just one disease—there are over a dozen types of childhood cancer and countless subtypes, each requiring specific research to develop the best treatment for every child. But in the last 20 years, only two new drugs have been specifically developed to treat children with cancer. Less than 4% of the National Cancer Institute's budget is directed to childhood cancer research. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation exists to change these realities.

While some organizations spread their research dollar between adult and children's cancers, every grant funded by the St. Baldrick’s Foundation is for childhood cancer research. In 2004 the St. Baldrick’s Foundation was created to maximize this volunteer–driven effort. The priorities: spending as little as possible to raise each dollar, and making sure every donation goes to the best research to find cures for kids fighting cancer. By working closely with leading pediatric oncologists, they determine the most promising research to fund and create funding priorities to make the greatest impact for children with cancer. While some organizations spread their research dollar between adult and children's cancers, every grant funded by the St. Baldrick’s Foundation is for childhood cancer research. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation takes great care with every donor dollar, keeping the staff small, the expenses low and directing every possible dollar to childhood cancer research. Since its inception, St. Baldrick's has raised over $125 million in childhood cancer research, and this story is far from over...

Head–Shaving Events: Why shave our heads? Because kids with cancer often lose their hair during treatment, "shavees" for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation show their support by shaving their heads voluntarily, and inspiring friends and family to donate money to support childhood cancer research. St. Baldrick’s head-shaving events began as a challenge between businessmen and have grown from one event in 2000 to over 1,300 events in 2012, raising critical funds for childhood cancer research. Events take place in pubs, restaurants, schools, churches, parks, malls, military bases, firehouses and any other place you can imagine. The kids with cancer tell story after story of how special they feel that volunteers shave their heads in support everywhere.

Amy Graff, owner of LouseCalls (877) LouseCalls, (561) 376-1066, is joining St. Baldrick's in support of Childhood Cancer Research, Boca Raton, Palm Beach, Florida 33498. "The shaving itself is just a means to an end" Amy said. "On the surface, 'shavees' shave because kids with cancer often lose their hair during treatment, and we stand proudly bald beside them. But the true goal–to cure childhood cancer–will be accomplished because, while shaving, St. Baldrick's raises funds for lifesaving childhood cancer research. We all have to do our part in this battle."

Amy Graff's son, Noah Graff, will be shaving his head, along with classmates and faculty at West Boca High School, in a St. Baldrick's Head Shaving Event April 10, 2014. Noah, who is Treasurer of the Event, said "we will take our turn in the barber's chair to raise funds for childhood cancer research. It's fun, it's meaningful, and it's for a crucially important cause." Noah Graff is dedicating his "shave" to an uncle that he never had the chance to meet, who died at the age of 5 from cancer. "We all need to speak up for kids’ cancer...I'm proud to be involved with such a worthy and important cause."

In support of raising funds for childhood cancer research, starting March 10, 2014 LouseCalls is offering a St. Baldrick's Special on Head Lice Removal throughout Florida. For any donation to St. Baldrick's up to $20, LouseCalls will take $20 off your head lice removal bill. Anyone that donates $50 or more to St. Baldrick's will get $25 off the bill, and a free lice comb. Donations need to be given through the St. Baldrick's Donation link on our website, or by giving a check or cash to a LouseCalls technician on your date of service. All the money goes directly towards childhood cancer research.

With each passing milestone, human lives—the lives of children with cancer—are being dramatically improved through the support of the St. Baldrick's Foundation. The continued momentum of this effort relies on volunteers and has everything to do with one very small but powerful word. You.
