Global Education Leaders Honored in Washington, DC

 
WASHINGTON - March 11, 2014 - PRLog -- Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Co-founder of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development; H.E. Mauro Vieira, Ambassador of Brazil to the United States; Dr. John DeGioia, President of Georgetown University; and CBS News will be the honorees at the March 13, 2014 World Affairs - HONORS Global Education Gala at The Ritz-Carlton, Washington, DC, at 6:00 PM.

Marillyn Hewson, Chairman, President and CEO of Lockheed Martin Corporation, will deliver the keynote address. Ms. Hewson said, “It's a privilege to join the World Affairs Council of Washington, D.C., in honoring these four accomplished leaders. This is an important opportunity to bring together world leaders to raise awareness of the value of education and global cooperation.”

Qatar Foundation will receive the Global Education Award in recognition of the organization’s worldwide commitment to learning and education.

“Guided by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, the Qatar Foundation has since 1995 been spearheading Qatar’s transition to a knowledge-based society by fostering innovation and excellence in education, research, and community development. As home to some of the world’s leading universities and researchers, we are delighted that the World Affairs Council recognizes the Qatar Foundation’s contribution to global human development and the acquisition of knowledge.”

Ambassador Vieira will be recognized with the Distinguished Diplomatic Service Award on behalf of his nation’s diplomatic corps in the United States. He said, “Brazil is honored to be the recipient of the World Affairs Council – Washington DC’s 2014 - Distinguished Diplomatic Service Award. The award reflects the increasing importance of Brazil-US relations and is a tribute to the traditional and long-standing ties between our peoples. It is also an important recognition of Brazil’s achievements as a vibrant democracy that learned from its own experience that economic growth, development and social justice are closely intertwined. On behalf of the Brazilian diplomats serving in the United States, I would like to express our deep gratitude to the WAC-DC, whose global education, international affairs and global communications mission priorities we strongly support.”

Dr. DeGioia is being honored as Educator of the Year. Dr. DeGioia said, “It's a great honor to accept this award on behalf of our extraordinary students and faculty at Georgetown. As a university community, we are deeply committed to excellence in both teaching and scholarship - to helping our students become their best, most authentic selves and to making a distinct contribution to both the academy and our global family.”

Jeff Fager will be honored with the Global Communications Award. Mr. Fager said, “We are dedicated to covering the world and in the past few years our reporting footprint overseas has steadily grown and includes some of our finest reporters.  International reporting is an important part of our CBS News heritage and we are grateful to be recognized for it.”

Edie Fraser, WAC-DC’s Board Chairperson and CEO of STEMconnector said, “There is an urgent need for increased national dialogue on how the United States can effectively bridge the global education ‘learning gap’ that exists in our nation’s middle and high schools, colleges and universities to permit our young people to effectively compete, work and communicate in our increasingly multi-cultural nation and inter-connected world.”
