SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - March 11, 2014 - PRLog -- Mosher Foundation to sponsor Senior Day at Santa Barbara International Orchid Show. The Santa Barbara International Orchid Show, the oldest and one of the largest annual orchid shows in the United States, will be returning to the Earl Warren Showgrounds in Santa Barbara, California on March 14-16, 2014.

The Mosher Foundation, whose goal is “to truly make a difference,” supports effective educational, healthcare and performing arts institutions in the Santa Barbara area, with a particular focus on partnerships. The Mosher Foundation, who generously donated 100 tickets to the orchid show, is named after Samuel B. Mosher who had a history with orchids in Santa Barbara going back to the Dos Pueblos Orchid Company, a 45,000 acre ranch north of Santa Barbara.

Lauris Rose, President of the Santa Barbara International Orchid Show, remembers going to the Dos Pueblos Orchid Company as a young child and credits the ranch with instilling a life-long love or orchids within her. She said of the donation, “Another new sponsor joins our Show! The Mosher family has its roots deeply anchored in the world of orchids, (Sam Mosher and his company, Dos Pueblos Orchids, put Santa Barbara on the world orchid map) and so we welcome them and thank the Foundation for assisting the senior community in being able to come out and enjoy the 69th Santa Barbara International Orchid show!”

“Though my husband, James, and I have been commercial orchid growers for over 40 years now, and travel the globe for other orchid shows, I have been attending Santa Barbara's show since I was around 12 years old. At that time, my parents had lived in Hope Ranch for 7 years, and loved all that Santa Barbara offered a young family for outings. One of our family's favorite things to do was to go to Dos Pueblos Orchid Company out on the bluffs in Goleta on Sunday, after church. We were all dressed up and touring the beautiful conservatory was so wonderful. I remember it to this day. Perhaps this was the spark that continues to kindle my passion for orchids even now.”

The Senior Day Sponsorship at the Santa Barbara International Orchid Show involves donating 100 tickets to the show that will go to seniors in full- or part-time care facilities in the Santa Barbara area and enable them to have a one-of-a-kind outing to the Show. Jill McRae Hyers, Director of Programs with Maravilla, a retirement community in Santa Barbara and one of the recipients of the sponsorship, said “What a wonderful opportunity to bring this fantastic Orchid Show to our residents who might otherwise not be able to attend!”

About the Mosher Foundation:

The Mosher Foundation is named after Samuel B. Mosher, who founded Signal Oil and Gas, the largest independent oil company on the West Coast in the 1950s. While a very successful businessman and corporate executive, Mr. Mosher’s primary interest was prize-winning orchids and exotic flowers. His 45,000 acre ranch north of Santa Barbara, Dos Pueblos, included Dos Pueblos Orchid Company, a stand-alone wholesale flower growing company.

Following Mr. Mosher’s death, his wife, Margaret, served as president of the foundation until her death in 2002. It was her wish that Edward E. Birch, vice president of the foundation and longtime advisor and friend to the Mosher family, assume responsibility for the foundation and serve as its president and CEO. He and members of the Birch family continue to serve as the leaders of the Mosher Foundation (http://www.mosherfoundation.org).
