ATLANTA - March 7, 2014 - PRLog -- To kick off Women’s History Month on March 1, Nene’s Secret ethnic hair care sponsored the Birthing Project USA Baby Shower in Atlanta celebrating 24 low-income Atlanta moms, some pregnant and others with infants ages two weeks to three months, at the Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Community Center.

The Birthing Project USA Baby Shower was held in collaboration with BeautifulOnes Georgia, Inc, a non-profit organization that provides community based doula support to women who want, but may not be able to afford, doula services, directed by Perez Ridley-Davis and the Atlanta Birthing Project directed by Gracie Bond Staples.

“These women would not have had a baby shower if it wasn’t for Birthing Project USA, Nene’s Secret and the two other organizations,” said Kathryn Hall-Trujillo, founding director of Birthing Project USA, which is the only national African American maternal and child health program in this country. “We had a great time. These moms received hair care products from Nene’s Secret and lots of baby gifts like onesies, hats, diapers and baby bottle holders. Some even received baby strollers.”

The day included a workshop with a Morehouse medical student who spoke about health and other problems faced during and after pregnancy from a man’s perspective.  Topics ranged from discussing pregnancy with a husband or boyfriend to health concerns. In addition, there was an orientation for 10 new Birthing Project SisterFriends who will volunteer to help the new mothers.

Birthing Project USA is a volunteer effort to encourage better birth outcomes by providing practical support to women during pregnancy and for one year after the birth of their children.  “African American women have a lot of stress during pregnancy,” said Hall-Trujillo. “They need social support.”

Brian and Nene Marks, owners of Nene’s Secret, sponsor the Birthing Project’s 2014 National Awareness Campaign and the Atlanta Community Baby Shower. Over the last 15 years, they have donated $1 million to the Birthing Project. “It’s important to buy from people who support your cause,” said Hall-Trujillo. “Brian and Nene are long term corporate sponsors of the Birthing Project in the USA and Malawi. They have helped the project grow from 19 to over 100 projects globally.”
