PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - March 6, 2014 - PRLog -- (Palm Springs, CA) - Iconic film and television actress Cindy Williams (American Graffiti, Laverne & Shirley) will host the 9th Annual Stars Among Us, benefiting the Mizell Senior Center’s Valley-wide Meals on Wheels program. The Meals on Wheels program was expanded in recent years, now serving over 120,000 meals each year to frail and homebound seniors from Palm Springs to the Salton Sea.

Stars Among Us honors local community members and groups who have made a significant impact on Valley residents and constituents of the Mizell Senior Center. This year’s honorees include Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet, The Community Foundation, and local philanthropist Harold Clumeck.

The event will transform two hangars of the Palm Springs Air Museum into an early 1960’s style drive-in diner and more. This will not be a typical black-tie gala. “You can come in your favorite cocktail attire or don your poodle skirt or your letterman jacket,” said Ginny Foat, Executive Director for the Mizell. “Enjoy the classic cars, diner-style food and décor right down to the 40-foot soda fountain and of course a lot of fun surprises,” Foat added.

“I thank the Board of Directors at Mizell for this honor” said City of Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet, “and I pledge to continue my support of the crucial services provided by Mizell each and every day to ensure our seniors thrive in the City of Palm Springs.”

Williams will emcee the American Graffiti-themed event on March 22nd beginning at 5:30pm, featuring a live musical performance by ShaNaNa.  The 50’s revival band also had a popular syndicated variety series that ran for five seasons in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s.

Tickets and additional information for the event are available at http://mizell.org, by calling 760-323-5689. Presented by Eisenhower Medical Center, and sponsored by numerous local businesses and individuals, including prolific philanthropist and Palm Springs Film Festival Chairman Harold Matzner.  The event is co-chaired by Hon. Judge Arthur Block (Ret.) and Kathy Block as well as Dr. Ronald Fragen and Carol Fragen.

Mizell Senior Center has been serving Palm Springs and surrounding communities for 40 years, and is the community focal point on healthy and active aging.  It welcomes active adults of all ages who come together for services and activities that enhance dignity, support independence and encourage involve-ment within the community.  The Mizell Senior Center is located at 480 S. Sunrise Way in Palm Springs.
