Winners Announced for First MSU-Bozeman Computer Science Graduate Poster Exhibition

BOZEMAN, Mont. - March 7, 2014 - PRLog -- Today, winners were announced for the first ever Computer Science Department graduate poster exhibition at Montana State University. The competition, sponsored by Golden Helix, Inc., called for computer science graduate students to submit posters describing their research.

The Computer Science Department Advisory Board judged the posters and named a first, second, and third place winner, who were all presented with Visa gift cards provided by Golden Helix.

Said Andreas Scherer, President and CEO of Golden Helix, “The level of commitment put into each poster was remarkable. The judges were very impressed by the quality of all of the posters presented. Golden Helix appreciates the opportunity to recognize the amazing research being done in the MSU CS department and have decided to conduct the competition on an annual basis.”

First place was awarded to Sean Yaw, for his poster entitled Non-Preemptive Peak Demand Job Scheduling. Yaw was advised by faculty member Brendan Mumey of the Computer Science Department. Yaw’s project involved scheduling jobs for the US Department of Energy’s Smart Grid with the aim of reducing peaks in the power curve.

The second place winner was Guangchi Liu, with his poster entitled Assessment of Multi-Hop Interpersonal Trust in Social Networks by Three-Valued Subject Logic. Liu has been working on this project with RightNow Technologies Assistant Professor Qing Yang, in hopes of accurately estimating trust in the topology of online social networks.

Melissa Dale took third for her poster, Design Pattern Grime and its Impact on Technical Debt. With faculty advisement from Dr. Izurieta, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Montana State University, Dale’s project entails working towards a more complete understanding of the structural properties and vulnerabilities associated with design patterns.

“It was wonderful to see twelve of our graduate students, with help from their faculty mentors, create posters for this inaugural research poster session.I am so appreciative of the generous support that Golden Helix provided; both in the form of t-shirts for all participants and prizes for the winners.I look forward to repeating this event in 2015,” said John Paxton, Computer Science Department Head.
