Honda Now Exports More Cars From American Than it Imports

The automaker has long built vehicles in North America and now exports more cars from here than it imports. Last year, Honda imported 88,537 vehicles made in Japan to our country, but North Americans made 108,705 vehicles that were then sent overseas. North American Hondas like the Accord and Civic were exported to 50 some countries across the world in the Middle East and Africa. Honda is now the first Japanese automaker to achieve this feat.

Honda has been building cars in America for more than 30 years now. American production began back in 1982 at Honda’s plant in Marysville, Ohio where they started with the Accord. Production in America has since expanded to other manufacturing plants in Indiana, Georgia, and Alabama. Honda also builds motorcycles and lawnmowers at a plant in North Carolina.

In total, Honda has put $12.3 billion into its plants since the Marysville assembly opened in 1982, leading to an incredible 26,000 jobs for Americans. They’ve also opened plants in Mexico and Canada with a total of 14 plants in North America. Next month Honda will open an additional plant in Mexico that will build the redesigned 2015 Honda Fit.

Here in North America, Honda assembles cars along with building engines and transmissions. The parts they used are mostly sourced from companies in the United States rather than Japanese imports, providing even more work for Americans. Last year, 95% of all Honda and Acura models that were sold at United States dealerships like Bosak Honda were made here in North America.
