         Beware Of  The Thief  Within You

March 6, 2014, Delhi, India: Sai Retina Foundation observed the day with various activities. The day began with a free eye check-up Camp. The Camp is unique in a way as blood sugar and blood pressure estimation was mandatory for all patients keeping in mind to screen the diabetics and the hypertensives (high blood pressure) especially. These are all important parameters for a healthy eye. After registration the patients boarded the Mobile Retina Van, which has been equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic facilities including retina screening which is yet another unique feature. The screened patients were also seen by Dr. J. S. Guha, COO, Sai Retina Foundation who is himself a very Senior Vitreo-retinal surgeon.

In-house campaigning was held from 09:00am to 12:30pm which was dedicated for treating of the patients and imparting knowledge to the patients through presentation on glaucoma. Glaucoma  is generally known as the "silent thief of sight" because the loss of vision is gradually seen over a long period of time and symptoms can be noticed only in the advanced stages damaging the optic nerve.  It is often associated to pressure buildup inside of the eye. If damage to the optic nerve from high pressure continues, it causes permanent hamper to vision.

As a matter to be known, Glaucoma cannot be cured, but if diagnosed early and treated well, this disease can be controlled. Generally people go to the optometrists complaining about their poor vision and spectacles are provided simply. But on the other hand the damage which is done due to disease like glaucoma is not known to many. It should be known as the matter of the fact that each day of delay in the eye check up can cost up to losing the sight forever.

Further, especially there was an arrangement of the SCYFIX machine for the patients of Retinitis Pigmentosa.

This was the first step taken this Glaucoma Day and will henceforth be observed annually so as to remind us of what goals we had set and what is the progress made towards it so as to proceed more precisely.
