Androklis Polymenis Donates 1 Million NXT coins to Brain Preservation Foundation

By: Brain Preservation Foundation
ASHBURN, Va. - March 2, 2014 - PRLog -- The Brain Preservation Foundation (BPF) has received a one million NXT coin ($43,000) donation from the digital currency entrepreneur Androklis Polymenis. The donation goes toward supporting its research into the development of a scientifically-proven medical procedure capable of preserving a person’s unique neural circuitry at death with the hope of allowing that person to eventually be brought back to life by future technology.

This large donation will be used by the BPF to help fund its electron microscopic evaluation of cryonically and chemically preserved animal brains which are provided to the BPF by the research groups competing in its Brain Preservation Technology Prize. This is a challenge prize offered to any research group which can rigorously demonstrate a technique capable of preserving an entire human brain with such fidelity that the structure of every neuronal process and synaptic connection remains intact and traceable using today’s electron microscopic imaging techniques. Mr. Polymenis’ generous donation will also help fund targeted research grants to scientific labs with the skills needed to overcome current limitations in cryonic and chemical preservation protocols.

A BPF spokesman said, “We are very happy to accept this donation in the form of digital currency as we appreciate that digital currencies may represent the future of money -just as brain preservation may represent the future of end-of-life care. In fact, the unique attributes offered by a purely digital, decentralized currency possibly make it uniquely suited as a means of retaining one’s wealth even while in long-term biostasis.”

A hallmark of digital currencies is their reliance on cryptographic codes as the sole means of accessing the currency, i.e. if the access code to a cache of digital currency is lost then the currency itself is effectively lost forever. This means that a person wishing to retain their wealth across what could be many decades of biostasis might attempt do so by memorizing their access code and destroying any physical record of it –putting this wealth out of circulation until their future revival with memories intact. Technical and legal questions abound, but the idea may give fresh reason to doubt the phase “You can’t take it with you.”

The donation was facilitated with the help of Nikola Danaylov, founder of SingularityWeblog.com and host of the popular Singularity 1 on 1 podcast.
