Follow on Google News | Guyandotte Explored in New BookLocal author tells the history of the area using stunning, vintage images
In this new pictorial history, the story of Guyandotte is told through vintage images and anecdotal captions. Readers will learn about Guyandotte’s first industries, logging and steamboat travel. They will see images of how most of Guyandotte was burned in 1911, after the Civil War’s Battle of Guyandotte. They will discover how after this battle, Guyandotte’s residents officially voted to become a part of the newer and larger city of Huntington, and how today, Guyandotte is a historic neighborhood with antebellum homes and local landmarks. Author Bob Withers, compiled a collection of rare images to show the signifiers of the area and some of the lesser known history. Images of floods that ravaged the area in 1907, 1913 and 1937 can be seen throughout the book. Information is also shared on Guyandotte’s two major industries—Special Metals Corporation, maker of nickel alloys, and Grief Brothers Corporation, a producer of shipping containers. Along with images of the Guyandotte United Methodist Church congregation and the ever-popular Moore’s Hardware, which dates from 1947, Guyandotte shares stories of the people and places that have shaped this historic Huntington neighborhood.
