It’s a beautiful stone barn conversion with a log-burning stove, a squishy sofa, pretty bedrooms and breathtaking views. A visit to the remains of nearby Tintagel Castle is exciting for children; it’s a steep climb to the top, so they’ll sleep well that night.

18^th century splendour with hot tub and table-tennis

Whitelady House (sleeps 12) is an imposing, 18^th century property near Tavistock in Devon, with hot tub, croquet lawn, Wii, table-tennis in the barn and dinner party catering on request. Overlooking a river and with the National Trust's Lydford Gorge at the bottom of its garden, it’s contemporary but cosy, and Dartmoor unravels 100 yards from the door. You’re welcome to bring dogs, and indeed a horse or pony.
