REDDING, Calif. - Feb. 24, 2014 - PRLog -- Author Linda Boyden will be a guest speaker at the Nevada Reading Week Conference, Saturday March 1st. 9:00 a.m. Participants will enjoy traditional Native stories and learn how these stories have been and still are being used within American Indian tribal nations. What makes this time-honored method of storytelling different from other methods? Native storytelling is a tribal nation’s cultural bedrock. Topics included are the various reasons for the stories; issues regarding when they should or should not be told; whether non-Native people should retell Native stories; and the different genres of Native stories. Preschool through Intermediate Grades.

Redding, California, author and storyteller, Linda Boyden, grew up playing in a sandbox of words. She imagined plays for her dolls to perform and told herself stories to fall asleep by. Bribing neighborhood friends to be students at her imaginary school or to act in her backyard shows, charging the audience--their mothers--a penny admission price, they entertained everyone for hours.

Boyden, a retired teacher, abandoned full-time teaching for full-time writing. Her first picture book, The Blue Roses debuted in 2002 from Lee and Low Books and winning their first New Voices Award. Since then it has won two other national awards and was included on the CCBC (Cooperative Children's Book Center) 2003 Choices list of recommended titles. Her second book, Powwows Coming,
was published by the University of New Mexico Press in 2007. She illustrated it making the pictures from cut-paper collage, another thing she loved to do as a child: making pictures with crayons and scissors. Book #3 (2010), also from the University of New Mexico Press, Giveaways: An ABC Book of Loanwords from the Americas, again illustrated by Boyden.

She's a dedicated storyteller, performing preschool stories monthly at both the Redding Barnes and Noble store and the Redding Library and a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators (http://www.scbwi.org/) (SCBWI) and Wordcraft Circle of Native Writers & Storytellers (http://www.wordcraftcircle.org/). Her latest release Boi and Poi Poi Puppy: A Tale of Puppy Love, published by Progressive Rising Phoenix Pres, is now available.
