PALM COAST, Fla. - Feb. 23, 2014 - PRLog -- FLAGLER BEACH, FL:  The Rotary Club of Flagler has joined the “World’s Biggest Commercial”.

The “World’s Biggest Commercial” is being created to raise awareness of the ongoing effort to eradicate Polio, worldwide. The members of the Flagler Beach club are joining Bill Gates, Jackie Chan, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Jane Goodall and over 75,000 others in drawing attention to the fight against Polio.

After nearly 30 years, and immunizing more than two billion children against polio, Rotary and its partners are on the brink of making history. As the commercial says “We are This Close”.

When Rotary began the fight in 1985, polio affected 350,000 people, mostly children, in 125 countries every year. Since then, polio has been reduced by more than 99 percent.

Fewer than 700 new cases were reported in 2011, and the wild poliovirus today is confined to isolated pockets in only three countries. They truly are “This Close” to ending polio forever.

But if they don’t finish the fight right now, polio could quickly resurge, with devastating consequences. More than 10 million children could be paralyzed in the next 40 years. This once-in-a-generation opportunity would be gone forever.
