FORT MCMURRAY, Alberta - Feb. 21, 2014 - PRLog -- SGI has been awarded a contract for surface preparation and coatings on sulphuric acid tanks. There are total 50 tanks, categorised as severe potential for corrosion. The corrosion of carbon steel storage containers and pipelines by sulfuric acid is a huge concern. The interaction of carbon steel with intense sulfuric acid generates a direct acid attack with the formation of hydrogen gas and ferrous ions, form a protective layer of FeSO4 between the acid and tank wet surfaces.

“Major factors affecting corrosion of steel in sulfuric acid are acid temperature, strength and velocity. Without protective film, the steel is subject to accelerated and localized corrosion. Various conditions deteriorate this protective film such as flow, liquid turbulence, diluting the acid with additional water, high temperature or agitation”, says Mihir Sheth, Director - Sheth Group of Industries.

A little hair crack or hole can damage your protective coating and can create localized corrosion.
