Marilyn Hewson, CEO, president and chairman of Lockheed Martin Corporation, Phebe Novacovic, chairman and CEO of General Dynamics Corporation and Mary T. Barra, CEO of General Motors, all attended this years’ Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA) STEM Conference in Washington, DC at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park hotel.

In 2011, the U.S. Department of Commerce reported that women held only 27 percent of all computer science jobs. Unfortunately, that number is not growing. However, in spite of the stagnant growth of women in STEM fields, there are great representatives such as Marilyn Hewson, Mary T. Barra and Phebe Novacovic who set the bar successful, innovative women in STEM.

Displaying an enormous support to the STEM industry and the 28th Black Engineer of the Year Awards honorees, Mary T. Barra, who leads her company’s overall efforts to strengthen GM globally as an industry leader in automotive design and technology, product quality, customer care and business results, proudly introduced her employee Mr. Gerald Johnson, winner of the Career Achievement in Industry award.

During the gala, Hewson expressed to the audience, “your active engagement at this year’s conference is helping to advance the conversation on leadership, diversity and innovation.” As Lockheed Martin Corporation was one of the cohost for the BEYA STEM Conference, Hewson continued to speak on behalf of her Corporation, paying respects to Lockheed Martin’s Black Engineer of the Year winner Stephanie C. Hill.

“Lockheed Martin has always been a company that looks ahead, and that spirit lived on in all of our employees who are shaping the future today.”

Novacovic’s company Gulfstream (a subsidiary of General Dynamics) was the cohost of the BEYA gala. “Tonight we come together to commend those who, through their hard work and innovative spirit, are helping our companies become better and stronger,” she said.

“Our honorees inspire others to seek tolerance and inclusion, by demonstrating the richness that diversity brings to us – differences in race, ethnicity, gender and experience provide the environment in which diversity of thought can flourish – and it is that diversity of thought that ultimately makes us stronger and better, and, on a human level, richer.

About The BEYA STEM Conference

The 28th annual BEYA STEM Conference, hosted by US Black Engineer & Information Technology magazine, the Council of Engineering Deans of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and Lockheed Martin Corporation, continues to bring together students, college administrators, recruiters, engineering and IT professionals, scientists, and high-level decision-makers from the corporate, government, and military communities, in an effort to broaden diversity in this country's technical and scientific work forces.
