St. Joseph’s Hospice launches new website to support people affected by life limiting conditions

Care Compass Launch (400x267)
PRLog (Press Release) - Feb. 19, 2014 - BELFAST, U.K. -- One of the UK’s largest hospices, St. Joseph’s Hospice, has recently launched a new support website www.carecompass.org.uk (http://www.carecompass.org.uk/). Developed in partnership with Aurion Learning, the site has been created for people affected with a life-limiting diagnosis.

Care Compass is a user-led website that aims to create a community of like-minded people, including medical professionals, who can share the issues that matter most to them.  It also provides a ‘one-stop-shop’ for useful information, advice and services and to provide help and support  for anyone who has been diagnosed with or is affected by a life limiting illness or condition, including families, carers, and friends.

With features like an ‘A-Z of services and resources’, and a visual location search, users can find relevant support services in their area in a few easy clicks and through the interactive forums. A story-bank feature lets users share their experiences and personal life-stories of living with a life-limiting condition, whilst getting support from others experiencing similar situations.

Emma Snow, St Joseph’s Hospice Finance Director, who came up with the idea after personal experience, said:

"People with a life limiting diagnosis want to be empowered to help themselves. Many still want to work, go out, manage their relationships and live life in much the same way as they did previously and they don’t always find it easy to talk to professionals. This website aims to give people the opportunity to find other people going through similar experiences support each other and live their lives to the full. The more people who engage with the website, the greater the impact it will have."

Commenting on the website, Dr. Maureen Murphy, Managing Director at Aurion Learning said:

“Working with the St Joseph’s team has been a great experience all round as we’ve had the opportunity to share our knowledge and expertise in the development of a scalable and inclusive online solution through Care Compass with a team that is committed to making a real difference to people’s lives.”

She added:

“Storytelling is something that we are very passionate about in Aurion, so we found the storytelling and storylistening aspect of the work particularly interesting as it gives the Care Compass community a platform where they can share their experiences of what is often a very complex and emotional subject in a way that others can connect with and get a fuller understanding of someone else’s life story, the impact of an event or condition and how they have coped.”

Jean Eveleigh, one of the people with a life-limiting condition who helped shape Care Compass, said:

“I have to spend hours trawling through dozens of websites looking for good quality, relevant, up-to-date information; everything from where to go on a date night that is wheelchair accessible, to the latest treatment options for my condition, to someone to offload on rather than having to upset my partner. It struck me as absurd that nowhere had thought to develop a site that brought all of these needs together under one website. This is what Care Compass aims to be, a one-stop-shop to help you to live with the health condition affecting your family.”

Care Compass is currently offering palliative care services to people in East London and will soon be applying for the second phase of the project, to roll-out Care Compass on a national scale. To get involved or post information about your services on Care Compass, please contact Paul Griffiths at p.griffiths@stjh.org.uk or call 020 8525 6000.

About St. Joseph’s Hospice

St Joseph’s Hospice provides skilled and compassionate palliative care to people in East and North London who have a life limiting illness which cannot be cured, and which will progressively become worse.

Some of our patients come to us at the end of their lives but many are referred to us at an early stage of their illness which allows us to work closely with them to help them to live their life to the fullest for whatever time is left. While lots of our patients are older, many are young adults in their late teens or early 20s.

We also care for and support the family members, friends and carers of our patients and try to help them through a difficult time, both during the illness of our patients and after their death.

We are a charity and the care we provide is FREE of charge.
