Deaf & Hearing Impaired Services Offers Hearing Loss Support Group at Madison Heights Senior Center

DHIS satellite site location offers Discussion, Awareness and Technological Assistance for the hard of hearing to enable individuals to understand how to cope with their hearing loss, share their challenges and help one another.

Feb. 18, 2014 - PRLog -- Deaf & Hearing Impaired Services, Inc. (DHIS), a 501(c) 3 nonprofit agency providing a continuum of services for deaf and hard of hearing older adults and their families in southeast Michigan, has announced the formation of a Support Group for individuals with hearing loss at the Madison Heights Senior Center.  The announcement was made by Linda Booth, President, DHIS.

Hearing Loss Group for D.A.T.A. will focus on Discussion, Awareness, and Technological Assistance for the hard of hearing. The purpose of the Hearing Loss Support Group is to enable hard of hearing individuals to understand how to cope with their hearing loss, share their challenges and help one another. Led by DHIS’ Support Group Coordinator Susan Sullivan, DHIS has established support groups at six other satellite site locations in Michigan: Birmingham, Farmington Hills, Monroe, Novi, Pittsfield Township, Port Huron and Shelby Township.

Beginning March 4, the Hearing Loss for D.A.T.A. will convene from 10:30 a.m. to noon the first Tuesday of each month.  The Madison Heights Senior Center is located at 29448 John R Rd.

“We are very excited to announce this support group for the hard of hearing in Madison Heights and the surrounding community,” said Booth. “The goal of the DHIS Support Groups is to help hard of hearing individuals help themselves through education, coping skills, listening strategies and the latest technologies.  We have had numerous requests for services like this and DHIS is proud to provide yet another resource for these individuals.”

A grassroots and consumer driven organization, DHIS serves deaf and hard of hearing older adults in southeast Michigan by providing access to services otherwise made impossible or difficult due to the communication barrier.  According to the State, approximately 1.4 million of Michigan citizens are deaf or hard of hearing, placing eighth in ranking among states for deaf population.
