Maintenance Guidelines of Boring Bars

IRVINE, Calif. - Feb. 17, 2014 - PRLog -- Boring bars perform various tasks in industrial processes. The modern boring bar can be used for desk surfacing, exact center to center boring, cam align boring and main boring among other tasks. Many of these tasks can be done by a simple touch of the button. Although many modern boring bars are referred to as portable boring bars, the heavy duty tasks they withstand for years means that they are not as portable.

Although different machines come with different operational and maintenance, their safety guidelines are standardized regardless of their makes or models. An overhead hoist should be used to move the bar safely and securely to the desired position. It is important to have your workspace well ventilated to protect you in case of combustible or explosive dust. Rather than to fill your lungs with iron dust or lose your eye, ensure you use a respirator and wear eye protection.

Securing the block during the boring process is one of the major safety considerations. Many options are available for this task. You could use boring tables, roll over bars or even welded frame-type supports. Boring tables are effective as they secure the engine block into position. These tables also allow you to easily move the boring bar from one cylinder to the next. Regardless of which option you choose, always ensure that the block is fixed securely before you begin boring out the cylinder.

Avoid using machines without instruction manuals. Manufacturers provide these manuals to ensure their machines are properly used. As long as your maintenance is scheduled regularly, your boring bar maintenance should be relatively manageable. Safeguarding your machines through regular maintenance ensures that you can rely on them whenever you have important jobs.

Designs of portable boring bar require them to be mounted on the engine block deck surfaces. Each boring bar has a hold down mechanism that ensures boring tasks are accurately accomplished. At all costs, never allow the tip of the boring bar to get into contact with your hold down mechanism. The hold-down clamp design effectively clamps without having to tighten it down with a three-foot helper bar. Over-wrenching can lead to an out-of-round condition when the cylinder is bore. Your user manual should inform you on the proper way to secure the boring bar to engine blocks.

Lubrication is another important boring bar maintenance procedure. Most boring machines have oil reservoirs that require constant check-ups. The oil levels should be inspected after every thirty days. Information on the type of oil required and its precise location can be obtained from your user manual. Many machines have sealed drive pulleys and motors that can last a lifetime without additional lubrication. Whenever something does not sound right, always inspect to ensure no problem develops.

For centering expanders and hand wheels many machines have snap-lid oiler designs. These components need regular inspection and lubrication schedules. Feed screws can be lubricated by directly squirting the right amount of oil onto them. Excess oil can leak onto the floor and attract unwanted grit and dust. Most machines come with sealed spindle bearing that don’t require additional lubrication. Always read your manual to be sure of exactly which component require boring bar maintenance.
