Feb. 15, 2014 - PRLog -- An average Director of Sales and Marketing in a hotel earn approximately $80,000 to $120,000 or more depending on the location and size of the hotel, but with bonuses, and special compensation, that number can increase to $85-$140,000 thousand or more per year.

Directors of sales of a hotel need to have a professional image, understand how to work with a variety of people, and make good business decisions.  The sales and marketing team needs to react to changing market conditions and keep the hotel full to maximize profits.  Marriott, Hilton, Doubletree, Holiday Inn, Embassy Suites and all of the major brands need good Director of Sales and are willing to pay top salaries for talent.

You don't need a four year degree to make it to the top of the hospitality business.  Almost 90% or more of the General Managers and Director of Sales started at line level positions or mid-level in the sales and catering department.  Experience means everything in the hospitality business.  Many individuals that were bellmen or front office clerks are now commanding six figure salaries at high end resorts and hotels

A great way to get started ad mid –level salaries at 40-60 thousand plus bonus is the sales and catering department.  Every hotel employs 1-10 or more sales and catering executives.  Take a 14-20 hour on-line certificate program at http://www.aprinda.com to get started .

Hotel sales and catering managers sell blocks of guestrooms, meeting and banquet space, and the hotels services and amenities to event planners.

If you prefer, you can also start as a bellman, front desk clerk, or housekeeper and try and work your way up.  These positions pay much less, and you might still need some sales or catering courses to outperform other candidates, but it can be done.

A front desk clerk is a great position to start at if you can afford to start at 8-14 an hour.  These positions welcome guests, check people in and out, and provide information and handle service requests from guests.  You must interact with all of the departments at the front desk, that is why it is such a great training ground.  The front office position is often the entry way for many individuals that eventually find their way to the lucrative General Manager or Director of Sales Position.

Many individuals started their career as a bellman, housekeepeers, and even some in the engineering department.  A bellman can earn a great entry level salary if you are able to land a job at a high end hotel.  The tips can be great, and there are rumors of some bellman that command six figure salaries.  Unfortunately, most won't be that lucky, and will earn low base wages plus customer tips from 2-6 dollars.

If you start at the front desk, sales or catering, engineering, housekeeping, on in the hotel restaurant or lounge.....stick with it, and you can make it to the top.  Good luck.
