Pathway Programs at Cerritos College Hosts the 2nd Annual “Non-Traditional Careers for Women”

On February 21, 2014, Cerritos College Pathway Programs will host the 2nd Annual Non-Traditional Careers for Women Conference.
 
NORWALK, Calif. - Feb. 18, 2014 - PRLog -- The conference will take place from 9:00am-12:30pm, and will have speakers and presentations focusing on various non-traditional industries for women.

Female high school students from St. Pius X/St. Matthias Academy and various high schools from ABC Unified School District, Bellflower Unified School District (BUSD), Downey Unified School District (DUSD), Norwalk/La Mirada Unified School District (NLMUSD), and Paramount Unified School District (PUSD) will participate in this year’s conference.  This event will serve as a starting point for these students to learn about careers where 25% or less of the workforce is comprised of women.

The Keynote Speaker is Dr. Lynn Shaw,Professor of Electrical Technology at Long Beach City College (LBCC), and the Founder and President of the Board of Directors for WINTER (Women In Non Traditional Employment Roles).  The Laborers Union, Iron Workers 416, Society of Manufacturing Engineers, and Technology Division of Cerritos College will provide demonstrations at the event. The students will talk to professionals in the areas of engineering, plastics/composites, woodworking and construction.  These professionals will talk about career opportunities, level of education, trends in the industry and answer student questions.

“Our slogan for the event is “Strong Women Building the Future.” We want to expose these students to career opportunities they may not ever consider.  Through this conference, we want to show students the possibilities of what a career in a non-traditional industry has to offer them” said Pathway Programs Program Facilitator, Carla Yorke.

The Conference is at Cerritos College in the Health Science Building, Room 102. Lunch for the event is being sponsored by Invensys Women’s Exchange.  Invensys is a global technology company that works in partnership with a broad range of industrial and commercial customers to design and supply advanced technologies that optimize their operational performance and profitability.

Cerritos College Pathway Programs Department’s mission is to create educational and career pathways for in and out of school youth, and young adults by providing a seamless transition from secondary to post-secondary education, and the skilled workforce.

Pathway Programs include career exploration, articulation agreements, concurrent enrollment, college readiness bridge programs, recruitment, parent presentations, enrichment workshops, and support services. The programs encourage students to pursue and successfully complete post-secondary degrees and industry valued certification, while increasing student engagement and achievement.
