News alert: C. diff infections on the rise nationwide

Feb. 13, 2014 - PRLog -- CALABASAS, Calif. — The Calabasas Dental Institute would like to inform the public of the rise of Clostridium difficile, or C. diff, infections nationwide resulting from the use of certain oral antibiotics, especially clindamycin.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, C. diff is a serious problem that has increased in occurrence and severity. It is linked to 14,000 deaths in the U.S. each year.

In order to reduce the rates of C. diff., medical experts recommend avoiding antibiotics that are associated with a high risk of infection from C. diff.

The list of antibiotics includes:

·         Clindamycin

·         Amoxicillin/Clavulanate (Augmentin)

·         Ciprofloxacin

·         Moxifloxacin

·         Levofloxacin

“These infections are occurring because many doctors are overprescribing antibiotics, which ultimately leads to the bacteria becoming resistant to the medication,” leading dentist Dr. Greg Rubin said.

“Once the bacteria become resistant, the antibiotic will no longer be effective and that will allow the bacteria to multiply and thrive, causing even more harm to the body. But we can work together to reduce the rates of C. diff by avoiding certain antibiotics that are known to increase the risk of this infection.”
