Follow on Google News | One-Third of Patients Need Second “Nose Job”...Miss Illinois Needed ThreeBy: Anil Shah MD She’s just been voted one of the 5 most beautiful women in the world by the prestigious Ideal Beauty fashion web site and.... Stacie has had three nose jobs. “I first broke my nose in high school as a cheerleader,” In 2009, the then Miss Illinois Teen USA decided that to compete further she’d need surgery. “I didn’t give much thought to who would do my operation,” she says. “I chose a plastic surgeon from an advertisement.” But Stacie wasn’t happy with the result. “My nose didn’t have a tip,” she says. “It just kind of curved down and off. It was very noticeable. It was very discouraging. My surgeon agreed I needed another procedure.” Stacie’s story is more common than most people think. Statistics show fully one third of rhinoplasty patients are so dissatisfied they opt to have a second procedure. Nevertheless, Stacie’s second operation in 2010 just made her problem worse. Her surgeon tried to create a new nose “tip” by using a silicon implant. To Stacie’s horror, her nose began rejecting the implant. The implant was causing a hump, pushing her nasal tip forward, and threatening to rupture. By 2013 the new Miss Illinois knew she had no chance to become Miss USA. “The problem was getting worse and I was getting a lot of negative feedback from judges and contestants,” This time Stacie did her homework. She researched top nasal surgeons, went for consults with several of them, and chose Dr. Anil Shah, a Chicago facial plastic surgeon. When I first saw her,”says Dr. Shah, “her implant was actually threatening to rupture her skin and cause a permanent scar.” Stacie needed surgery, but Dr. Shah faced a dilemma. Swelling from a rhinoplasty doesn’t fully come down for a year. The Miss USA pageant was just four months away. What’s more, Stacie would be scrutinized on national TV, in close-up HD, and from every angle. The risk was enormous...for everyone involved. But Dr. Shah decided to go ahead. He says, “Stacie’s character was so impressive and the results of her previous work so poor that I just had to try to help her.” The facial plastic surgeon operated on February 5th removing the implant and creating a new tip with a graft from Stacie’s septum. Then on June 16th he sat down to the Miss USA Pageant. “I remember the NBA Finals were also on that night. I didn’t care. This was my NBA Finals. I cheered every time she advanced.” In the end Stacie finished second runner-up. No other Illinois contestant has finished higher in over 40 years. Three months ago Stacie moved to New York to become a model for Trump Model Management. Then she was voted one of the world’s five most beautiful women. “Everything since my surgery’s just been falling into place,” she says. Dr .Shah says, “Too many people aren’t happy with their rhinoplasties and the main reason why is they don’t make enough effort in choosing their surgeon.” The facial plastic surgeon has these tips for patients: 1) Ask How Many Rhinoplasties Your Surgeon Does (The average plastic surgeon does just 12 rhinoplasties a year. In 2012 Dr .Shah performed 308, among the highest volumes in America.) 2) Ask How Often Patients Seek Revisions (The national average is one-third. Less than 1% of Dr. Shah’s patients seek revisions). 3) Don’t Choose A Plastic Surgeon From An Advertisement and 4) Consult With Several Plastic Surgeons Before Making Your Choice Stacie says, “Before I had no idea what I was doing when I chose my surgeon. I finally got it right. In my case this surgery has literally been life-changing.” End
