The partnership is between St. Louis psychiatrists Arturo C. Taca, Jr., MD, Steven Harvey, MD, and Lincoln, Neb., psychiatrist Walter Duffy, MD, Premier Psych founder and CEO, who has dTMS treatment centers throughout Nebraska. Premier Psych TMS – St. Louis, located at 11477 Olde Cabin Road, Suite 210A, Creve Coeur, Mo., 63141, is the first out-of-state office for the company and the first medical office in Missouri to offer BrainswaydTMS as an alternative treatment for depression.
In 2013, the FDA approved the Brainsway dTMS device for treatment for patients with depression who have not benefited from antidepressant medications. It is a noninvasive technique used to apply brief magnetic pulses to the brain. The pulses are administered by passing high currents through an electromagnetic coil placed on the scalp. The pulses induce an electric field in the underlying brain tissue, and cause depolarization, which activates or inhibits the brain cells in that area.
“The dTMS system is appealing to psychiatrists and patients because it offers a way to treat depression without medications that typically are taken throughout a patient’s life. Electro-Convulsive therapy (ECT) is the gold standard for treatment resistant depression but must be done in the hospital with anesthesia. TMS is an outpatient procedure that has little disruption to a patient’s daily life with minimal side effects and is a safe, effective and practical way to offer a noninvasive treatment for major depression,”
In other countries, mainly in Europe, where BrainswaydTMS is frequently used to treat major depression but has been studied for a variety of other disorders including Bipolar Depression, Chronic Pain, Smoking Cessation, Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD), Autism, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
Located in Creve Coeur, Mo., Premier Psych TMS – St. Louis is the first and only medical office in Missouri to bring Brainsway Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (dTMS) machine that offers individuals who suffer from severe depression a noninvasive alternative to antidepressants and related medications.
