Kids come together to conserve Uttarahalli Lake

LITTLE LAKE KEEPERS’ initiative by United Way of Bengaluru to involve children to revive ailing Bengaluru lakes

BANGALORE, India - Feb. 10, 2014 - PRLog -- The Sunday morning of 9th February was not a usual Sunday for more than 450 children at Uttarahalli lake, as they had come with a mission to raise their voice for the revival of the lake in their vicinity.  United Way of Bengaluru (UWBe) an international NGO, as part of their “Wake the Lake” campaign along with the  Uttarahalli Magekere Walkers’ Association engaged children from different schools by conducting painting competition for various ages, education sessions and quizzes about lakes and organised fun events.

Speaking on this meaningful occurrence, Sabu Thomas, Chairman, UWBe said, “The objective of this initiative is to broaden the knowledge of environment preservation and educate children on the importance of lakes in their locality. I feel highly satisfied to see these little children come forward in huge numbers and participate to save the Bengaluru lakes. “

Anjani, a differently abled artist from UWBe’s partner NGO ‘Samarthanam’ created a silhouette of the Uttarahalli Lake on canvas. He also guided the children on colouring different areas of the outline to finally create a grand Uttarahalli Lake picture. The audience present at the event coloured and signed their names onto the canvas.

United way of Bengaluru has been actively creating awareness building program by several volunteering programs for tree planning, lake cleaning, poster drives, Lake-a-thon, engaging the local community in lake monitoring work and restoring eco-system balance.

As part of the “Wake the Lake” campaign, United Way of Bengaluru has been actively mobilizing resources to undertake the maintenance of a number of lakes in Bangalore . Many of the lakes have shown remarkable improvement with the return of migratory birds and an improvement in the water table.
