Feb. 7, 2014 - PRLog -- Walking specialist On Foot Holidays has launched a self-guided hike to the spectacular Serra de Tramuntana Mountains of Mallorca for 2014. Uncovering the little-known, wild and remote side of this temperate Mediterranean isle, the scenic eight-night trail encompasses the sophisticated capital of Palma, lofty peaks and deep valleys, and wonderful local cuisine (as with all On Foot Holidays).

Enjoy a Palma preamble and explore labyrinthine streets, palace courtyards, art museums and the elaborate Gothic cathedral before heading for the hills. The Serra de Tramuntana range, running down the west coast of Mallorca, is a World Heritage Site because of the extraordinary techniques used to develop agriculture on its steep slopes over the centuries. Highlights include the impressive Finca Galatzo (an historic estate house) in the first few footsteps, the chance to learn how to cook Mallorcan paella at a family-run hotel en-route, and magnificent 360-degree views of mountains and sea from the ‘Archduke’s trail’, perched high atop a ridge. Traditional Soller, with its meandering alleys, excellent restaurants and pretty port, is well-worth a diversion.

The walk concludes with a celebratory circular hike from Alaro, where a picturesque castle sits on the cliff edge and Es Verger restaurant – famed for its slow-roasted lamb – is a must-visit.

Given Mallorca’s mild year-round climate, it is possible to enjoy this fascinating walk as a winter break (expect occasional rain), for the spring flowers or for autumn colour.
