During Alan’s recent visit to the college, he hosted a session with the students beginning with an introduction to Alive and the varied types of work they do. He also explained his own journey through education, work experience, into employment and now onto running Alive with fellow director Alex Mead.
Alan comments, ‘My visit to BCOT was driven by my belief that employers have an obligation to support local communities, particularly young people who will be making important decisions about long-term career choices. In my experience, a little guidance and support goes a very long way. We decided to take it one step further by taking on two apprentices to join the team in Basingstoke. We’re a growing company and we need proactive, creative individuals with real spark and enthusiasm to help us continue to prosper. I really feel that an apprentice will fit that bill perfectly!’
Judith Moule, Training Consultant & Apprenticeships Coordinator at BCOT comments, ‘Alan’s visit was very well received with lots of positive comments, the students responded well with several very interested students who were keen to pursue his apprenticeship vacancies. We’ve had some really encouraging responses already.’
At the end of last year Alive also supported Dove House School Academy, a specialist secondary school for children with learning difficulties. This was in the shape of a work placement throughout the winter term, assisting with their vocational learning pathway. The student was able to experience working in the studio and had the opportunity to join client meetings, developing both their business and technical design skills alongside supporting the Alive team.
Supporting young people has been part of Alive’s plan since inception, working on projects for children in care and supporting their creative development through the Big Lottery Funded ‘Creativity 4 Health’ initiative where they worked with 18 local authorities.
Alan concludes, ‘Discovering exciting new talent is an ongoing challenge for businesses in the creative design industry. It makes sense to encourage and nurture that natural skillset and support young individuals who are keen to pursue a career in design.’
