Stephen A. Hartel of Trilogy earns Accredited Investment Fiduciary (AIF) Designation From The Center for Fiduciary Studies

WOBURN, MA, ISSUED February 4, 2014…Stephen A. Hartel, an Independent Financial Planner and manager of the first East Coast office for Trilogy Financial Services, recently was awarded the Accredited Investment Fiduciary® (AIF®) Designation from the Center for Fiduciary Studies™ (the Center), the standards-setting body for fi360.

Since 1999, fi360 has been supporting a more prudent investment decision-making process by offering world-class Training, Tools, and Resources for investment fiduciaries and other financial services providers.

The AIF Designation signifies specialized knowledge of fiduciary responsibility and the ability to implement policies and procedures that meet a defined standard of care. The Designation is the culmination of a rigorous training program, which includes a comprehensive, closed-book final examination under the supervision of a proctor, and agreement to abide by the Code of Ethics.  On an ongoing basis, Designees are required to complete continuing education to maintain the AIF Designation.

Hartel, a resident of Andover, MA is a native of Colorado with considerable industry experience. Prior to joining Trilogy, Hartel was affiliated with a boutique investment management firm. He has also worked in the industry as a private consultant, as the head of a registered investment advisory firm, and at a highly specialized unit of Fidelity Investments. Prior to his 15 years in the financial services industry, he was a corporate financial analyst in the telecom industry.

Hartel holds an MBA in Finance from the University of Denver, and has furthered his education with graduate courses at both the University of Southern CA and Merrimack College. He has taught numerous classes about money to children in local schools.

“This is a great designation to have,” he said, adding, “We do not believe in cookie cutter financial plans. Everyone’s needs and goals are different; what may make sense for one person may not make sense for another, even if they are at the same age or stage in life. To me, financial independence means reaching the point where work becomes optional and retirement becomes affordable—but each person might define that differently, and I enjoy working with people to help them achieve those goals.”

Hartel lives outside of Boston with his wife and twin teenage daughters. His oldest daughter lives in Denver and is currently attending graduate school in Italy. Hartel is actively engaged in his girls’ ice hockey, field hockey, and lacrosse. He teaches life skills to youth in schools and church, and is a nationally certified instructor who teaches both adults and youth at the Andover Sportsmen’s Club. He is a Reserve Deputy Sheriff for Worcester County.

Fi360, based near Pittsburgh, Pa., is the first full-time training and research facility for fiduciaries, and conducts training programs at universities throughout the United States and abroad. The Center for Fiduciary Studies confers the AIF Designation as well as the Accredited Investment Fiduciary Analyst™ (AIFA®) Designation. AIFA Designees are the only recognized professionals trained to perform fiduciary assessments, which measure how well investment professionals are fulfilling the fiduciary duties required of them by the applicable investment legislation, case law, and regulatory opinion letters.

The Center for Fiduciary Studies confers the Accredited Investment Fiduciary® (AIF®) and Accredited Investment Fiduciary Analyst™ (AIFA®) professional Designations (http://www.fi360.com/main/center_studies_designations.jsp).  For more information on future fi360 events, training programs and fiduciary products, visit www.fi360.com.
