Program helps coders prepare for CCS before ICD-9-based exam changes this April

BEDFORD, Mass. - Feb. 4, 2014 - PRLog -- To help medical coders prepare for the Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) exam before it changes, Libman Education has released a special CCS Mock Exam with Personal Coaching Session by veteran medical coder Mary Beth York, CCS, CCS-P – instructor of Libman Education’s highly successful CCS Exam Prep course.

The current ICD-9-based exam is slated to end April 7, 2014, when the CCS exam becomes ICD-10-CM/PCS-based. By taking the exam prior to this date, coders can avoid having to both learn ICD-10 and prepare for the CCS exam simultaneously.

The CCS Mock Exam with Personal Coaching Session tests one’s acute hospital coding skills with a proprietary practice exam that closely resembles the actual CCS exam, followed by a one-on-one consultation with renowned CCS instructor Mary Beth York. This gives coders a feel for how the CCS exam is conducted, and also helps them to determine their strengths and weaknesses so they can appropriately prepare to take the exam before April.

“The CCS credential is a great achievement, as it demonstrates mastery of acute care hospital coding,” said Mary Beth York. “But passing the CCS exam is not easy; even experienced coders have difficulty passing. There is no substitute for hard study. However, proper guidance can make one’s studies more focused and productive. It is this kind of guidance that the coaching session offers.”

York, who has mentored hundreds of students to CCS success, added, “While many mock CCS exams are available, finding one that is really helpful is difficult. In Libman Education’s Intensive CCS Exam Prep course, hundreds of students have used this particular exam to successfully prepare for CCS. And, while April is almost here, there is still some time remaining to take it.”

The CCS Mock Exam includes both a multiple-choice section with 89 questions, and a fill-in-the-blank section with 12 medical record cases (six outpatient records and six inpatient records).

After students finish the exam, it is graded and analyzed. Then begins the one-hour Personal Coaching Session, where Mary Beth York offers helpful tips and suggests test-taking techniques. York also identifies areas that need more study, and discusses preparation strategies for exam success.
