PRLog - Feb. 3, 2014 - NEW YORK -- The GAMBELLI AWARD 2014
Established in memory of Giulio Gambelli, better known as the maestro of Sangiovese, the award sponsored by ASET and PGI is now in its second year. The under 35 years old oenologist was select from the fifteen finalists, based on the following principles, the highest respect the soil, the vine, the varietal, the vintage, and the territory.

The name of the young winemaker who, according to the strict jury in 2013 was the closest to the wine making style to the late Giulio Gambelli will be unveiled in Montepulciano on the occasion of the 19th edition of the preview of the Vino Nobile, taking place the 16th and the 17th of February, admission is limited to trade professionals only. Promoted by A.S.E.T. (Associazione Stampa Enogastroagroalimentare Toscana) and the group of journalists I.G.P. (I Giovani Promettenti, the blog network created by Lorenzo Colombo, Roberto Giuliani, Carlo Macchi, Luciano Pignataro and Stefano Thesi), in collaboration with Consorzi di Tutela del Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and also from the contribution of the wineries that have had Gambelli as a friend and teacher (Fattoria di Rodano, Il Colle, Montevertine, Poggio di Sotto, San Donatino, Tenuta di Bibbiano and Tenuta Ormanni).

The award honors the memory of the late great consultant, and is awarded annually to a young winemaker under 35, chosen from a list of nominees, selected by leading industry journalists. The fifteen finalists are asked to send a maximum of three samples of wine produced or co-produced by them, the blind tasting follows, leading, in the name of “gambellianity” for choosing the winner.

The wines in the tasting were 46. The labels came from throughout the national wine scene, from Trentino to Puglia, passing through Piedmont and Sardinia. Many were the varietals submitted, and produced with the outmost respect for purity, for the vine and for the terroir just as the master would have expected. The members of the jury, which met January 19th, guests of the Consorzio del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, were: Stefano Tesi, Paolo Pellegrini, Francesca Pinochi, Marco Gemelli, Paolo Valdastri, Alessandro Maurilli, Franco Cervelin and Roberto Giulian, Carlo Macchi and Luciano Pignataro were absent for unforeseen circumstances.

The jury first verified and classified the rate of actual compliance, then issued a qualitative assessment for each wine, eventually drawing up a classification whose combined values were contained in a fairly narrow range, a clear sign of the excellent work by the young winemakers. The award was finally given to the professional who presented the “gambellian” wine that achieved the best overall score. In the event of a tie, the award would have been rewarded to those who had submitted the most “gambellian”wines amongst their submissions.

The winner’s name will be officially proclaimed February 19, 2014 at 7:00 pm, at the fortress of Montepulciano, at the opening of the gala dinner for the press on the occasion of the preview of Vino Nobile organized by the Consortium.

Last year the prize went to Fabrizio Torchio the Piedmontese winemaker. The Prize consists of Giulio Gambelli’s commemorative plaque and a check for € 1,500.
