Delhi, Bihar and Jharkhand Produce the Top Engineers in India: Aspiring Minds

Delhi, Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand retain their positions as states with most employable engineers. Punjab in the top 25 percentile list of most employable states in India.

Feb. 3, 2014 - PRLog -- New Delhi: The National Employability Report, Engineering Graduates - 2014 by Aspiring Minds reveals that Delhi and Bihar/Jharkhand lead in supplying the best talent pool of Engineers in the country. The report is based on graduate class of 2014 and covers data of more than 1, 20,000 engineering students from 520+ engineering colleges, across multiple Indian states. The study has been done using AMCAT, India’s Largest Employability Test conducted by Aspiring Minds.

“Our National Employability Report in its latest edition goes deep in to the employability of engineering graduates – their capability, qualifications and aspirations. Looking at state wise distribution of employable talent, we can see that while certain states produce huge quantity of engineers, the average employability in significantly low. It is clear that that states need to be conscious towards better education quality rather than building more capacity.” said Himanshu Aggarwal, CEO, Aspiring Minds.

The mushrooming growth in terms of number of engineering colleges in the country has been alarming and has come out as the major reason for low employability of engineers. The southern states like Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, which have the highest number of engineering colleges, continue to have lowest employability.

Employability numbers are shown to vary from city to city within the same industry. Employability for IT product roles in Delhi is as high 13% and as low as 1% in Chennai. Bengaluru with 3.7% employability emerges as the best amongst Southern and Western cities in the IT product sector.

The reason for this skew in employability is the proliferation of engineering colleges in Southern and Western India that has brought down the employability figures. In comparison, there are far fewer engineering colleges both in Delhi and Kolkata.

The report shows a drastic drop in employability in all roles from Tier 1 to Tier 2 cities whereas employability drops for almost all the roles except sales engineer from Tier 2 to Tier 3 city.

Compared to last year, the employability in Tier 1 city colleges has marginally increased in all roles except ITES/BPO and Hardware and Networking. Simultaneously, it has increased in all roles except IT product among tier 2 city colleges.

The report clearly brings out that Tier 3 cities cannot be neglected from a recruitment perspective as at least one out of every six engineering colleges is in a Tier 3 city. 12% of engineers employable in IT Services are in Tier 3 cities – an absolute number of approximately 13,000.

The earlier edition of Aspiring Minds ‘National Employability Report for Engineers’ was unveiled in 2012 by the then Hon’ble Education Minister, Shri Kapil Sibal.
