NEW YORK - Jan. 31, 2014 - PRLog -- JANUARY 28, 2014. STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Sundog Theatre is receiving a $25,000 grant to tour “Burnt,” its 45-minute original theatre piece that educates youth on the dangers of smoking and tobacco advertising. The grant from Public Health Solutions on behalf of NYC Coalition for a Smoke-Free City allows Sundog to offer 25 no-cost performances for youth organizations that include middle and high schools during spring of 2014. Interested organizations should call the Theatre to book a free show in Staten Island, Brooklyn, or Manhattan.

This three-actor, interactive theatrical piece toured successfully to 10,000 middle and high school students on Staten Island in early 2012. Produced by Sundog Theatre, “Burnt” is directed by Michael Tennenbaum, a teacher and director at Wagner College Theater and former co-director at NeverLand Theatre on Staten Island. The show culminates with an interactive discussion between cast and audience.

“Our aim is to enlighten youth about the dangers of smoking and the efforts and funds tobacco companies expend to reach children, who are their ‘replacement smokers’”, explains Sundog Theatre Executive Director Susan Fenley. “Burnt” is fictitious and couched in some satire to appeal to kids; however, it carries messages and information about serious issues.” The piece uses young actors to more effectively impact pre-teen and teen audiences. As research, Sundog received input from Wagner High School students, which assists the play’s effective impact on young people about issues surrounding smoking.

“Burnt” was written by Staten Island playwrights Eric Petillo and Fay Corinotis. Petillo, a graduate of Wagner College’s theater program, is a local playwright, director, actor, journalist and current curator of new works for Sundog Theatre. Corinotis--a member of Dramatists Guild of America and founding member of Staten Island Playwrights Collective--has written plays, sitcoms scripts, and works for Sesame (Street) Workshop. Director Michael Tennenbaum holds an MFA in Directing from Brooklyn College and has over 30 years of experience acting and directing. His directing credits include "Pedagogy" for NY Fringe Festival and many NYC and New Jersey productions. He also teaches acting, directing, and film at Wagner College.
