MANHATTAN, Kan. - Jan. 30, 2014 - PRLog -- Kansas State University student Clarissa Corkins has been named a Nancy Larson Foundation scholar and awarded a $1000 scholarship in recognition of her outstanding academic record and community service.

The Nancy Larson Foundation proudly supports students majoring in elementary education across the country by awarding scholarships to deserving students each year.

Corkins is one out of six recipients selected from the hundreds of applicants received by the Foundation.

Corkins is a junior studying elementary education with an emphasis in math. Corkins has participated in numerous volunteer programs where she has worked one-on-one with children. She is currently with Schools of Hope, helping motivate students to improve reading skills. She has hands-on experience volunteering with Boys and Girls Club and Union Valley Grade School , plus has spent five years teaching at Junior Academy summer camp.

"I cannot wait to be a role model for my future students to show them that I care about them and their learning," said Corkins. "I want to see them succeed."

"Corkins is the type of aspiring teacher that we want to nurture and support. Our classrooms need intelligent, energetic, young educators that can continue to provide the best possible learning environment for elementary students," said Nancy Larson, who established the Foundation in 2006. Nancy is the author of two nationally successful curriculum programs: Nancy LarsonĀ® Science K-4 and Saxon Math K-4.

Juniors, seniors and graduate students who have declared an elementary education major are invited to submit a personal narrative about qualities that will make them excellent teachers. Applicants are also asked to include community service activities and personal experiences they have had working with children.

Larson, a former teacher and curriculum director, has dedicated her life to advancing elementary education. Her original Saxon Math K-4 program was developed after teachers expressed their need for a classroom-tested math program that would prepare children for advanced math classes. In recent years, Larson has used the same approach to develop Nancy Larson Science for kindergarten through fourth-grade students. The program was written to provide in-depth science content in an easy-to-teach format.
