Follow on Google News | HeartSine Supports Youth Cardiac Screening through Simon’s Fund with AED Donation, Loan for ChainOn behalf of Simon’s Fund, HeartSine is donating a samaritan PAD automatic external defibrillator (AED) to the Ukrainian Soccer Club,a non-profit organization that develops and promotes soccer in the Eastern Pennsylvania region. The club comprises about 500 players, from ages eight to eighteen, that make up 38 teams. The soccer club was selected by the team that raised the most money for Simon’s Fund first annual 5K run, called Simon Says Run. With over 500 people in attendance, the 5K raised $15,000 for the non-profit organization. “We are pleased a sports club was selected for the AED donation, as most sudden cardiac arrests in children occur during sporting events,” says Stephen Garrett, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for HeartSine. “One of our goals is to place an AED in as many sports clubs as possible, which can significantly increase the positive outcomes for SCA.” Darren Sudman, co-founder of Simon’s Fund, says “One of the highlights of Simon Says Run was the Chain of Survival Relay, where six high school teams competed against each other by performing tasks associated with saving someone from sudden cardiac arrest. We loved creating a competition that also provided a valuable education.” Simon’s Fund used HeartSine’s samaritan PAD Trainers for the Chain of Survival Relay event in which the teams of school kids from local high schools raced to make a mock call to 911, turn on the AED and attach the pads to a practice dummy, follow the AED prompts, deliver a shock and run to the finish line. About SCA Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a condition in which the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating, causing blood to stop flowing to the brain and other vital organs. SCA usually causes death if it's not treated within minutes.CPR alone will not restart the heart, so the American Heart Association recommends CPR combined with early defibrillation (within three to five minutes) for the best outcome. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), SCA claims more than 300,000 lives annually in the U.S. alone. It occurs abruptly and without warning, with 84 percent of SCA events occurring outside of the healthcare setting. About Simon’s Fund Simon’s Fund was instrumental in the passage of the first legislation in the country to protect student athletes from sudden cardiac arrest, Pennsylvania’ Since 2005, Simon’s Fund has screened more than 8,000 children’s hearts for conditions which cause sudden cardiac arrest, detecting conditions almost one percent of those children screened.
