MELBOURNE, Fla. - Jan. 27, 2014 - PRLog -- With the start of the new year many people are using nutritional supplements. Many people are taking or have been taking supplements for years without doing much research on what is actually in the product.  From protein powders, protein bars, and energy drinks; many of them contain Splenda.

Splenda is an artificial sweetener that is chlorinated sugar.  Another name for splenda is sucralose.  Many people will read a label and think that its sucrose (sugar). Make sure it says sucrose and not sucralose.

McNeil Nutritionals (the manufacturer) makes its claim that Splenda is not digested or metabolized by the body, making it have zero calories. The chemical process to make sucralose makes it so your body can’t metabolize it.  Since your body can’t metabolize it then they claim that is has zero calories.  Each packet of splenda contains about 4 grams of sugar that is processed with chlorine.  All of the studies (not many) that have been done have nothing to do with consumer safety and most of the funding of these studies are from McNeil Nutritionals.

In doing my research, I have found that most protein supplement powders now contain Splenda.

Some popular products that contain Splenda include:

Most Protein Powders, bars, and energy drinks

G2 Gatorade

5 Hour Energy

Metamucil

Airborne

Diet Soft Drinks, Breakfast cereals, and canned fruits

How to Determine if Splenda is Harming You

The best way to determine if Splenda or sucralose is affecting you is to perform an elimination test. First eliminate it and other artificial sweeteners from your diet completely for a period of one to two weeks. After this period reintroduce it in sufficient quantity.

For example, use it in your beverage in the morning, and eat at least two sucralose containing products the remainder of the day. On this day, avoid other artificial sweeteners so that you are able to differentiate which one may be causing a problem for you. Do this for a period of one to three days. Take notice of how your body is feeling, particularly if it feels different from when you were artificial sweetener free.
