Follow on Google News | New Book Illuminates the History of Tuscan SpringsLocal author shares the history of the resort using striking images
In this new pictorial history, Tuscan Springs, originally “Lick Springs,” is highlighted with vintage images. The book discusses how Tuscan Springs was intimately connected with such historical events as the Gold Rush, logging, railroads, flumes, steamboats, Red Bluff becoming head of navigation of the Sacramento River and the eruption of Mount Lassen. The mineral spa resort was one of the first spa resorts in California, as well as the country and continues to be a common historical topic of the area. Author Bryon Burruss displays the collection of images, many of which have never before been published, in order to share the story of this unique California resort. He states that “With more than 50 active springs in its prime, Tuscan Springs was said to cure everything from cancer to the common cold.” Though resort’s legacy has faded over time, Burruss hopes his new book will help preserve the history for future generations and inspire others to write and record their own local history. Highlights of Tuscan Springs include: •A rare panoramic photo, showing the complete resort from end to end. •Information on a newly-discovered connection between Tuscan Springs and the famous Ishi, “the last of the Yahi,” the Native American tribe which made use of the mineral springs. •Details on how Tuscan Springs was the first place where borax was discovered in America.
